"I am mostly greatful I didn't end up dead in the streets.
I am greatful I'm here today
to see a beautiful little girl
and to know what a happy
life feels like." -Anonymous

First Step at Lake View is DCCCA’s newest women’s treatment facility located on the south edge of Lawrence. First Step provides a quiet campus setting with large areas of green space and relaxing views from all areas of the building.

Specializing in the treatment of women
First Step offers a continuum of alcohol and drug treatment specifically designed to meet the unique needs of women, pregnant women, and women with dependent children. Treatment options include non-medical detoxification to address a woman’s ability to safely manage withdrawal, intensive short term residential stay, extended residential services to prepare for re-entry into the community, and a continuum of outpatient programs in collaboration with Lawrence Outpatient Program. Intervention focuses on a woman’s individual needs, using motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy and Twelve Step programs.

Women’s treatment needs extend beyond abstaining from alcohol and drug use, and First Step’s expanded service components help reduce barriers to long term recovery. Pregnant women participate in extensive well-baby services, often returning to First Step after their babies are born to continue their recovery journey. Parenting skills training, health and wellness services, referrals for domestic violence intervention and mental health services are just a few of the unique offerings. Case management helps women find employment, safe housing, or continue their education to ensure they can provide for themselves and their children upon discharge.

Children’s Services
DCCCA believes that women should not have to leave their children to participate in treatment. Children age 10 years and younger can live with their mothers at First Step. Children receive age-appropriate, special attention in the licensed child care facility, or attend school, while the women are involved in treatment activities. Then, at breakfast, at dinner, at bedtime, or during leisure time, mothers may receive hands on teaching and role modeling from staff as they navigate the joys and challenges of parenting without substance use. Mothers are assisted in accessing community resources to address their children’s physical, emotional, and educational needs.

Family Services
Addiction is a family disease. Women and their children will need the support of family as they return to the community to continue their recovery journey. First Step offers couple, family and multi-family therapy, as well as referral to community support groups, to help loved ones understand how addiction has impacted them.
