Lawrence Outpatient Program (LOP), a program of DCCCA, Inc., provides individual and group treatment to Douglas County residents with substance use or abuse issues. Assessment, early intervention, alcohol and drug addiction education, relapse prevention, and on-going support for recovery are offered to adolescents and adults through intensive outpatient and outpatient modalities.

The treatment interventions at Lawrence Outpatient are based on the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) best practices. A proven combination of Cognitive Behavioral techniques and basic Twelve Step philosophies merge into a curriculum that changes an individual’s way of acting, by changing the way they think, and then supporting those changes with encouraging involvement in community groups such as NA or AA. Interventions are complimented by service referrals for mental and physical health, and case management for housing, employment, parenting, and other assessed needs. Families, especially parents of adolescents, are offered education and counseling to help them understand the impact of their loved ones’ substance use on their lives.

Intended as an alternative to residential treatment, adult Intensive Outpatient Treatment is designed for individuals who are assessed as chemically dependent. Gender specific groups for both men and women meet three hours a day, three days a week for up to 15 weeks. Adolescent Intensive Outpatient groups meet three hours a day, three days a week for up to eight weeks.

Lawrence Outpatient offers weekly mixed gender groups for individuals who are not dependent on alcohol or drugs, but who may abuse them. Morning and evening times are available to accommodate work, family and school schedules. The eight hour Alcohol and Drug Information School is offered twice monthly and fulfills the court requirement for basic substance abuse education. Aftercare groups offer a relapse prevention focus and support for adults and adolescents who have completed intensive outpatient or residential treatment.

The Lawrence Outpatient Program works closely with other community agencies to identify and assess the need for substance abuse treatment, then support the client’s recovery process. Our partners include the community mental health center, Heartland RADAC, youth residential programs, court services and community corrections, foster care and family preservation providers. Lawrence Outpatient also provides assessment and counseling services away from the main office at the University of Kansas and Lawrence Community Shelter.
