DCCCA Prevention Coordinator, Karin Leimbach, will speak at the Prescription & Addiction Forum at University of Central Oklahoma next week.
In preparation for National Poison Prevention Week, the University of Central Oklahoma Nursing program, in partnership with the Oklahoma Center for Poison and Drug Information, and the Substance Use Prevention Alliance of Oklahoma County (SUPA), will be hosting a prescription medications and addiction forum for the community. DCCCA’s Prevention Program Coordinator, Karin Leimbach, will be speaking on the expert panel.
Why a host a community forum on prescription medications and addiction?
According to 2016 data from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention:
- Opioids (prescription opioids, heroin, and fentanyl) were involved in 42,249 deaths in 2016, more than any year on record
- 40% of all opioid overdose deaths involved a prescription opioid
- On average, 115 Americans die every day from an opioid overdose
This free community forum on Friday, March 2, 2018 is open to the public. The forum will take place on the UCO campus in the Nigh University Center in Constitutional Hall from 1:00 to 3:00pm. The public is encouraged to attend and learn more about the prescription drug epidemic’s impact on Oklahoma’s young adult population.
Gain education and prevention tools to utilize in everyday living
Attendees will learn about safe use, storage, and disposal of prescription drugs and information to help combat this growing addiction. Deaths from overdoses have been on the rise and most of those involve prescription pain medications.
This forum hosts a diverse panel of experts to provide information on:
- Combining medications and overdoses
- Signs of a prescription drug overdose
- Information on the lifesaving overdose reversal drug Naloxone
- Testimonies from individuals and families affected by this growing epidemic
- How pain medications (Opioids) work
- Going from Injury to addiction
- Signs of addiction
