Prescription drug overdose deaths have quadrupled among 12-25 year olds in Kansas over the past 12 years. DCCCA Prevention Services is addressing the prescription drug and opioid crisis in Kansas through the Strategic Prevention Framework for Prescription Drugs (SPF-Rx) initiative.
Projects within the SPF-Rx Initiative include:
Statewide Planning and Implementation
DCCCA coordinates the Kansas Prescription Drug and Opioid Advisory Committee. The purpose of the Kansas Prescription Drug and Opioid Advisory Committee is to develop a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary strategic plan to address the opioid crisis in Kansas and implement coordinated efforts across the state. To find more information on the work of the advisory committee please visit www.preventoverdoseks.org.
Annual Kansas Opioid and Stimulant Conference
The Opioid Conference provides an opportunity for professionals from multiple specialties to learn about the epidemic and provide insight for developing a path forward for Kansas. Conference topics include strategies regarding how to address the epidemic through the different lenses of Prescribing, Prevention, Treatment, Recovery, Law Enforcement, and Clinical Intervention. Medication Disposal Projects
The goal of this project is to increase the safe disposal of prescription opioids using medication disposal products, in target populations, to decrease social availability for individuals between the ages of 12-25. For more information about implementing your own safe medication disposal efforts view our Safe Medication Disposal Toolkit here. DCCCA provides free medication disposal resources to communities and agencies across the state. Click here to request free medication disposal resources.
Safe Medication Storage
The SPF-Rx program is working together with our Kansas Child Placing Agency to provide medication lockboxes to all of the DCCCA foster families. These boxes will promote safe use, storage, and transportation of medication for children in foster care and help to prevent accidental poisoning.
