“The work that these two have put into developing the Suicide Fatality Review Board has been a tremendous asset to the Douglas County community. Their leadership to get the board functional and making recommendations is commendable. This will make a difference in the lives of many,” said Chrissy Mayer, DCCCA’s Chief Community Based Services Officer. 
 
The Community Health and Safety Award recognizes individuals or groups that demonstrate innovation, excellence, and success in enhancing the community’s safety, health, and/or wellness. It honors efforts that have significantly improved the quality of life for a population of people, highlighting achievements in community health and safety. 
 
DCCCA’s Community-Based Services division supports prevention and safety initiatives, including training and technical assistance for community members and coalitions, evidence-based resources, education about overdose prevention and medication safety, and the distribution of Naloxone to community partners and Kansas residents. Trainings promote positive mental health and the prevention of suicide, substance use, overdose deaths, impaired and distracted driving, and avoidable traffic fatalities and injuries. 

DCCCA Champion of Recovery and Mental Health Advocacy Award

“Wayne has consistently gone above and beyond to ensure clients at First Step at Lake View, DCCCA’s women’s residential treatment center, have essentials needed to be successful upon discharge.  He does an excellent job case planning to assist our clients with housing and demonstrates the needed knowledge for accessing resources in the community. He is always available to assist our clients,” said Kimberly Freese, DCCCA’s Chief Behavioral Health Officer.
 
Respecting the experiences and the dignity of each person we serve, DCCCA provides residential and outpatient treatment programs and peer support services for individuals experiencing substance use and other mental health disorders, as well as transitional housing for women in recovery, and their children. DCCCA’s Alcohol and Drug Information School fulfills the first time DUI offense requirement for the state of Kansas.

“Laura has been fostering for almost 30 years. She has been able to navigate the many challenges of the foster care system with courage, grace, and compassion. She gives every child that arrives into her home with the highest standard of care, compassion, and advocacy. For all of Laura’s work through all of the ups and downs, what makes her truly special is her willingness to be involved and to share herself with others, whether that be through her knowledge, perspective, or her voice,” said Lisa Marx, DCCCA’s Child Placing Agency Director.
 
The Golden Heart Award acknowledges an outstanding DCCCA foster family that excels in providing exceptional devotion for the children in their care. It celebrates those who go above and beyond in their role as caretakers, showcasing their commitment, compassion, and dedication to fostering.
 
With a focus on the safety and well-being of children, DCCCA provides family preservation, Sobriety Treatment and Recovery Teams, therapeutic fostering, fostering, and kinship/relative care, as well as post-adoption supports. Our We Kan Drive program helps to remove barriers youth in foster care face when working to obtain their driver’s license. 

DCCCA Community Partner Award

“The Community Partner Award recognizes Darron and Bartlett and West’s longstanding partnership with DCCCA and their role in helping bring transformative projects to life—from the DCCCA Service Center to transitional housing for women in recovery, and their children—strengthening our ability to serve the community for years to come,” said Lori Alvarado, DCCCA’s Chief Executive Officer. 
 
Bartlett & West earned an Award of Excellence in Design Build from the Associated General Contractors of Kansas, Inc. for its work on the DCCCA Service Center, 1739 E 23rd Street, which opened in 2024 in Lawrence. The first residents began moving into Hope Rising: A DCCCA Recovery Community in July. There, they continue to receive DCCCA treatment services and support as they transition from residential care to independent living.

– Keynote Speaker

Author and speaker, Jimmy McGill is a dynamic force in the realm of recovery and advocacy, he sits as the Executive Director of Next Step Recovery Housing, and Senior Treatment Policy Advisory for Palm Beach Recovery Centers. Formerly the Director of Peer and Recovery Services for the state of Arkansas (2018-2023).

A founding member of the SAMHSA Region 6 Peer Support Advisory Committee and founding Chairman of the National Association of Reentry Professionals, Jimmy leads pioneering efforts in peer support and reentry advocacy. Emerging triumphantly from a lifetime of incarceration and a twenty-three-year battle with addiction, Jimmy has transformed into an esteemed author and speaker, fueled by an unwavering purpose.

Despite a challenging past, Jimmy has graced stages alongside presidents, influenced drug and reentry policies, collaborated with Arkansas’s supreme court on program development, and addressed audiences nationwide. Honored with the “Jimmy McGill Peer Leadership” Award in 2019, the 2021 Trail Blazer award from the Department of Human Services, and the 2023 Arkansas Peer Legacy Award, his transformative journey is a beacon reshaping reentry and recovery efforts across the nation. Featured in numerous articles, Jimmy’s narrative is actively reshaping perceptions and driving change on a national scale.
